Each takes you to a part of Europe you may have visited before or somewhere you might plan to go in the future. A perfect read for the summer without travel. Some of the stories are familiar because I have watched most of his travel shows, but many were new to me, and I found myself jotting down the names of lesser-known places I'd want to visit (a rural part of Denmark, Mostar, and Northern Italy, to name just a few). Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2020. The Rick Steves Guides’ Marketplace is full of fun virtual experiences and cultural insights. A new friend took me inside his home, to the hearth, and introduced me to what was left of his great-grandfather. Rick's writing style is very engaging and the book is chock-full of colorful photographs to bring the stories to life. Rick Steves' writing feels personal, likes he is talking just to me. I want to be Rick Steves. Whenever I've traveled as an adult I prefer his guide books for his "not a tourist but temporary local" approach to travel. This book is great for a new armchair traveler, but I liked his previous book better (Postcards From Europe)...maybe because I heard the stories for the first time 20 years ago. I love all the funny stories. I've always had a soft spot for Rick Steves. I like his take on Europe, exploring the history but also the current culture. Quite enjoyable, with a few excellent essays. This book is a must read for all, no more you travel persuasion or ideals. Great book to read during a non travel year, Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2020. In the age of rising nationalism and the pandemic, it was a lovely treat to read this book. Lots of colorful photography and essays covering a variety of regions throughout Europe. We want to go to Europe, but we can't. Rick’s insight is never far from me during my travels, whether I’m solo or with friends, and reading this made me wistful for all the places I’ve been and loved and made me long to go to all the places I haven’t yet been. Thankfully, most of the stories just provided wonderful tales of his travels across Europe. But for newbies, who might not have the time to binge all his shows, this is the next best thing to experiencing Europe beyond. This book is not quite a travel guide but it's not quite a typical travel book. Please try again. As a longtime follower of Rick Steves and a lover of Europe, I enjoyed perusing this book. And I’m happy to announce that "For the Love of Europe" — which is already in bookstores across the USA — comes out as an audio book next Tuesday, August 11. Every chapter has you thinking... there's a message in each little essay. He entertain. But I can dream of those “meals of a lifetime” that seem almost routine in Italy. This book is a great read, especially when we aren’t able to travel now, due to the pandemic. The familiar brought me great memories, and the new gave me ideas on where to go when we're able to travel again.
